FYI~It has come to our attention that some other local agencies are ill-advising parents (and nannies) to treat their nannies as self-employed (1099) persons or to simply pay them cash. According to the IRS 2008 Household Employer's Tax Guide*, this is both inaccurate information as well as illegal.
This type of unprofessional advice exposes the client to tremendous risk and makes them liable for back taxes, penalties and interest. Oh sure, at first glance, it sounds great, is less expensive and seems like it would make life so much easier. It's a clever marketing ploy by those other agencies to use...sounds as if they are saving you lots of money...but, unfortunately it is illegal and simply not worth the risk.
